Artificial intelligence has finally answered a question patients have asked their plastic surgeons for decades:
How many years younger do you look after a facelift?
According to new research published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, you’re likely to think you look an average of 6.7 years younger after a facelift.
Artificial intelligence (AI) neural networks, trained to identify age based on facial features, will have you know that you actually look 4.3 years younger.
All four AI neural networks consulted in the study—Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and FacePlusPlus—were 100 percent accurate in age-assessing preoperative photographs.
Unfortunately, human researchers asked the AI to study only facelifts performed by a single plastic surgeon.
“Each patient image was processed using four publicly available and proven convolutional neural networks: FacePlusPlus, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM.”
Turning Back the Clock: Artificial Intelligence Recognition of Age Reduction after Face-Lift Surgery Correlates with Patient Satisfaction
The 50 facelifts studied were performed between 2011 and 2016, with one-year postoperative results being compared to photographs taken before facelift surgery was ever done.
How soon will it be before patients can choose a facial plastic surgeon based on his or her age-defying AI score, and before surgeons start setting their pricepoint accordingly?
