Lagos Woman Dies After Cosmetic Surgery; Clinic Denies Visitors, Media

    By Surgical TimesJune 3, 2022

Days after the death of a young female cosmetic surgery patient, a Lagos plastic surgery center is turning away visitors and the media.

The patient’s death was first brought to the attention of the public and media by a local real estate agent and friend via Twitter on June 1st.

That series of tweets alleges medical negligence, that the patient’s death was withheld for days, and that the clinic failed to inform even the patient’s family of her passing before her body was brought to the morgue.

The young plastic surgery patient, as yet publicly identified by her first name only, died after undergoing surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinics in Lagos, Nigeria.

A friend of the late patient’s, who goes by Miss Posha on Twitter, says Crystabel “died days ago without anybody knowing,” and that the clinic “didn’t find it needful to contact any of her relatives.”

Posha suggested that the staff failed to give proper care to Crystabel, and said that when friends went to check on her, they were given a letter that stated “her body has been deposited at the mortuary.”

“I’m not against anybody that want to enhance their body or anything as such…. I’m against doctors that claim they have experience abroad, come down to Nigeria to kill young people.”

A clinic press release, posted to Instagram yesterday, says the young woman, a Port Harcourt socialite, died on May 31, five days after her surgery, having suffered a “very rare acute blood transfusion reaction.”

Clinic staff applied “life saving interventions,” but despite “valiant efforts by the team,” the woman perished, according to the press release.

Cynosure says that next of kin was unable to be contacted immediately as a phone number had been inaccurately recorded, but that they managed to make contact with Crystabel’s family through a third party within three hours of her death.

A local news outlet reported Thursday that following the death of their patient, the clinic has tightened its security and shut its gates to visitors.

Reporters from Nigeria’s Premium Times were refused access by security.
