Denise Richards is trying to persuade her daughter not to get breast implants.
At 52, she’s also planning to have her own breast implants removed.
She has had them for over 30 years, not knowing how ‘toxic’ they were, she told Bustle magazine in an October 31 interview.
“The reason why I’m getting them out is I didn’t know how toxic [they are] when I was 19. And it’s not an easy surgery. It’s painful!”
Denise Richards, to Bustle, October 31
Richard’s daughter, Sami Sheen, is an OnlyFans creator and, at 19-years-old, is now the same age her mother was when she got her own breast implants.
Sheen’s ‘biggest concern’ at the moment is to quit vaping; something she’s been told she needs to do before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.
The D cup breast implants Sheen plans to get are something she has wanted since she was 10 years old.
“I was 10 years old and like, ‘I can’t wait to have big boobs like my mom,’ Sheen tells Bustle. “All my friends were getting boobs, and I was just like, ‘OK, when’s it my turn?”
Richards, Sheen’s mother, says it’s a feeling she can relate to. That she was made fun of as a teenager because her breasts “were mosquito bites.”
Forty-three years later, Richards is also planning to get her own breast implants removed.
“I’m trying to talk her out of it because—and the reason why I’m getting them out—is I didn’t know how toxic [they are] when I was 19. And it’s not an easy surgery. It’s painful!,” Richards told Bustle.
Like Richards, a growing number of celebrities have also opted to have their breast implants removed in recent years.
The Bachelor’s Zilda Williams said September 6, that she was just 12 days away from an explant surgery in Bangkok, Thailand, in which she’d finally have her DD breast implants removed. Williams, now 40, got breast implants when she was 23-years-old.
Supermodel Joy Corrigan shared her explant surgery journey in September, stating that breast implants ‘are basically killing me.’
Model and rapper Angela White, (former known as Blac Chyna), underwent a series of procedures in March of this year to remove her breast implants, her butt implants, silicone injections, and facial fillers; a process she shared on social media.
Popularity wanes
Breast augmentation surgery was long the most commonly-performed cosmetic surgery procedure each year in the U.S.
Its popularity dipped in 2020, when for the first time in 15 years it wasn’t the nation’s #1 procedure.
U.S. plastic surgeons reported that year an aggregate loss of revenue for the procedure of an estimated half-billion dollars.
Industry statistics were then unavailable for two years.
Soft market
U.S. breast implant manufacturer Ideal Implant, Inc., liquidated in June of this year, having “been unable to generate sufficient income from sales or to secure the capital investment necessary” to carry on.
U.S. breast implant manufacturer Sientra announced the withdrawal of its fiscal year 2023 guidance on October 30, with CEO and President Ron Menezes stating the company “continue[s] to see softness in the augmentation market.”
Menezes told American Society of Plastic Surgery President Steven Williams that “Sientra is here to stay, and we are working with our capital partners to put the Company on stronger financial footing,” and that “there is no disruption to our business or our ability to serve you or deliver for patients.”
Corrected Nov 8, 2023 at 6:42 am: Richards has not had breast implants for 43 years and a paragraph that said so has been corrected. We misinterpreted an excerpt from Bustle and apologize for the error, which is entirely our own:
“I was made fun of as a teenager [because my boobs] were mosquito bites. I got them done at the same age Sami is wanting to get them done,” she says. Though now, 43 years later, Richards is planning to get hers removed.” – Bustle
