BBL Surgery Leads to Sepsis, Loss of Life Savings

    By Surgical TimesNovember 12, 2023

Nigerian social media personality Jay Boogie, 25, said on Friday that she was left with sepsis and acute kidney injury after undergoing liposuction and gluteal fat grafting surgery (popularly known as a Brazilian butt lift) on October 30.

Boogie (born Daniel Anthony Nsikan), says she was asked to stop taking hormonal medications in preparation for surgery, but was otherwise healthy prior to surgery, and that she has “test results to back up this claim.”

Surgery was reportedly done with Dr. Chidinma Akpa of Curvygirl Essentials, and CGE Aesthetics, according to a public health status update shared by Boogie with her 225,000 followers.

Three social media accounts associated with the doctor, surgical center, and recovery home are now private, reportedly occurring after this incident gained widespread attention.

Boogie says that a few hours after surgery, her surgeon told her she had “developed sepsis and acute kidney injury.”

And that her doctor and clinic have since “refused to take responsibility” and “abandoned” her.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death if not treated urgently, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Treatments can include antibiotics, IV fluids, and dialysis in an ICU.

On dialysis since November 1, Boogie has exhausted her life savings, she says.

A GoFundMe fundraiser with a $6,000 CAD goal, organized by Betty Achom of Scarborough, Ontario, had raised $890 CAD as of late Sunday evening.

Boogie says she has exhausted her life savings and taken out loans, and is now reaching out to the general public hoping for financial support to deal with her medical care.

She says she has four siblings for whom she is the sole provider.

    Sepsis After BBL Surgery

Brazilian butt lift surgery is a high-risk procedure. Death and sepsis are rare but possible outcomes.

Patient Crystal Call went into septic shock (a subset of sepsis with a substantially increased risk of death), after getting a Brazilian butt lift in March 2017 at Seduction Cosmetic in Aventura, Florida, according to a report by NBC Miami.

Darcie Russell, 21, contracted sepsis after traveling to Turkey for a Brazilian butt lift according to a July 2018 report by BBC News.

Southampton mother Sophie Dewey said in January 2021 that she nearly died after contracting sepsis following a Brazilian butt lift surgery also done in Turkey.
