Dani Li, a 42-year-old Brazilian pop star, died Wednesday, January 24, of complications arising from liposuction and breast surgery.
On Friday, January 19, Li, whose given name is Danielle Fonseca Machado, had liposuction and breast reduction surgery in Pinhais, Brazil. She underwent the latter procedure to reduce pain and discomfort, a family member shared.
Li suffered a complication during the surgery and was rushed to a hospital in Curitiba, Brazil.
Li is survived by a grieving husband and a seven-year-old daughter.
Her husband, Marcelo Mira, told Brazilian media the family is shaken and her funeral will be held Saturday.
Cosmetic surgeon Luciana Freitas is believed to have performed the star’s surgical procedures, though no fault or wrongdoing on Freitas’ part has yet been determined.
Dr. Freitas has yet to respond to a request for comment. The Times does not allege or intend to imply any wrongdoing on her part. Death is an inherent risk of most surgical procedures, a rare but dire outcome influenced by a wide range of factors beyond a surgeon’s personal performance.
No cause of death has yet been determined.
