54 Women Voted ‘America’s Best Plastic Surgeons’ in All-Time High

(Surgical Times) — Women dominated in this year’s broadest search for the nation’s best plastic surgeons.

Of the 379 plastic surgeons ranked best by peers, 54 are women (14.25%).

That’s higher in number and percent than in any previous year since the poll began in 2021.

The poll, conducted by Newsweek magazine and data collection firm Statista, Inc., is currently the industry’s most comprehensive.

Invited by email, plastic surgeons and medical colleagues self-originate providers by name who they believe qualify as among the best at performing each of the top five most popular plastic surgery procedures of the year.

That meant liposuction, and breast, eyelid, nose and facelift surgery were “on the ballot” this year, for a total of 855 possible ranking positions: 185 positions for the best breast augmentation and facelift surgeons, 175 for liposuction and rhinoplasty surgeons, and 135 for eyelid surgeons.

Surgeons could be voted the best in any one or all five of the top procedures, and many were. On average, plastic surgeons voted as among America’s best were so voted in an average of 2.25 of the 5 surveyed surgical procedures.

Women occupied 99 of the total ratings positions (11.58%), up from 86 last year (10.68%).

The providership in plastic surgery has been male-dominated since the industry’s inception, with men currently comprising roughly 81 percent of US board-certified plastic surgeons.

The patient demographic is reversed: 92 percent of people undergoing plastic surgery last year in the US were women.

Medical colleagues didn’t cast votes for the “15th best breast augmentation surgeon in America” or the ”23rd best facelift surgeon”—both accolades earned by women plastic surgeons. Rather, ranking positions were determined by the number of votes cast for each surgeon by name, then augmented by a weighted criteria from Newsweek—ABPS board-certification boosted a surgeon’s rating by 5 percent for instance, while in-state votes counted for slightly higher than out-of-state votes.

Barring the addition of a fifth procedure to be voted on in 2022, it’s roughly the same criteria that has been in use for four years.

Colleagues also didn’t vote by gender, and the women who appear here were voted as among America’s best plastic surgeons of either sex.

Rated Best in all Surveyed Surgical Procedures

Sheila Nazarian, MD, of Beverly Hills, Calif., was rated one of the best plastic surgeons in America in all five of the surgical subspecialties for which nationwide votes were collected—liposuction surgery, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, facelift and eyelid surgery. In 2023, Dr. Nazarian was likewise voted best across-the-boards, sharing the distinction then with three other female colleagues.

Highest Single-Procedure Rankings

Rated collectively against both male and female colleagues nationwide, these female plastic surgeons earned the highest ratings for individual surgical procedures as noted:

• Marissa Tenenbaum, MD, was rated the 15th best breast augmentation surgeon and 20th best liposuction surgeon in America. St. Louis, Mo.
• Emily Clarke-Pearson, MD, was rated the 15th best liposuction surgeon in America. Baltimore, Md.
• Amy Colwell, MD, was rated the 23rd best breast augmentation surgeon. Boston, Mass.
• Jennifer L Walden, MD, was rated the 23rd best facelift surgeon in America. Austin, Texas.
• Sheila Nazarian, MD, was rated the 25th best liposuction surgeon in America. Beverly Hills, Calif.
• Nina S Naidu, MD, FACS, was rated the 25th best breast augmentation surgeon in America. New York, N.Y.
