Medina did say however that the procedure was a “‘simple’ asthetic procedure,” that his friend passed away “today,” and he urged women specifically to be wary of negative influences from social media.
“This standard of ‘perfect’ bodies that are impossible to achieve displayed on Instagram and in the media needs to end urgently,” Medina shared less than 18 hours ago.
The 3X World Surfing Champion took to social media to mourn, and to warn others about the potential tragedies that can come as a result of cosmetic surgery.
Medina posted the following on Instagram in his native Brazilian Portuguese, for his 11.4 million followers.
Here, it has been independently translated into American English:
“ATTENTION
“Today I lost a friend due to ‘simple’ aesthetic procedures. Oh world, it’s surreal, people….
“Especially you WOMEN, this standard of ‘perfect’ bodies that are impossible to achieve displayed on Instagram and in the media needs to end urgently.
“Why risk your life for nothing? Can not understand. We are young, we have several other ways of feeling good, healthy, beautiful, if I can give some advice. We need to return to REALITY in everything. That’s how we are, period. This FAKE world will end up killing more and more young people.”“ATTENTION PEOPLE!!!”

Women made up roughly 92 percent of U.S. cosmetic patients in 2021, counting both surgical procedures such as breast augmentation and the Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and nonsurgical procedures such as laser and filler treatments
The patient’s and surgeon’s name, the procedure being done, and the cause of death are all unknown at this time.
